Ethiopia

Ethiopia

Lalibela's rock-hewn churches, Axum's ancient history, and a highland climate unlike anywhere else in Africa.

Ethiopia works on a different rhythm than most African destinations, starting with its capital: Addis Ababa sits at high altitude, giving it a genuinely temperate, cool climate rather than typical tropical heat, and it functions as much as a diplomatic hub — home to the African Union headquarters and a large international community — as a travel gateway. Bole, the airport-adjacent district, anchors most of the city's hotels and serviced apartments, with Kazanchis and the historic Piazza neighborhood rounding out the rest.

The real draw for most first-time visitors, though, is the Northern Historic Circuit — Lalibela's eleven rock-hewn churches, carved downward into volcanic rock and still active places of worship; Gondar's 17th-century royal castles; and Axum's ancient obelisks, tied to one of the oldest continuous civilizations on the continent. The distances between these sites are long enough that short domestic flights from Addis, not self-driving, are how almost everyone covers the circuit. It's a fundamentally different kind of African trip than a safari — built around history and architecture at altitude, not wildlife.
