Uganda

Home to the largest mountain gorilla population on earth, split between two ancient forests.

Uganda holds more mountain gorillas than any other single country, and the vast majority of them live in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a dense, steep tract of rainforest in the country's southwest, with a smaller population in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park near the Rwanda and DR Congo borders. A trek here means hiking through genuinely wild, tangled terrain to spend a strictly limited hour with a habituated gorilla family — an experience that shapes almost every itinerary built around Uganda, and one that draws travelers who might otherwise never have considered the country at all.

Kampala anchors the rest of the trip with the energy of a fast-growing East African capital, while nearby Entebbe, set on the shores of Lake Victoria and home to the international airport, offers a calmer, greener alternative for arriving, departing, or simply decompressing before and after time in the forest. Travelers with a few extra days typically add chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, often called the primate capital of Africa, or a stop at Jinja, the town marking the source of the Nile, for whitewater rafting and a slower riverside pace.
